De Engelse actrice Jean Simmons (1929-2010) was jarenlang een gevierde filmster; aan beide kanten van de Atlantische Oceaan kreeg ze voor haar films keer op keer veel lof vanwege haar veelzijdigheid en genuanceerde vertolkingen op het witte doek. Anders gezegd, ze was een vooraanstaande hoofdrolspeelster en een zeer getalenteerde actrice, net zoals haar generatiegenoten waaronder Jane Greer, Leslie Caron, Janet Leigh of Esther Williams.
In tegenstelling tot deze vier actrices heb ik Jean Simmons helaas nooit ontmoet voor een gesprek, ofschoon ik wel enkele keren contact had met haar. In 2003 had ik haar een brief geschreven met de vraag voor een one-on-one gesprek met haar en, indien het haar paste, om het enkele weken later te laten plaatsvinden toen ik in Los Angeles was. Op een dag belde ze me—ik kan het nog steeds niet geloven: Jean Simmons die mij uit het niets opbelde—om te zeggen dat ze in die periode niet thuis zou zijn.
Ik zou haar uiteindelijk nooit ontmoeten, maar er volgden nadien nog wel andere telefoongesprekken; ze was keer op keer zeer vriendelijk—hartelijk zelfs—en praatte ronduit over haar jaren als topactrice.
