De omschrijving ‘typische studioregisseur’ is zeker van toepassing op acteur, scenarioschrijver en filmregisseur Vincent Sherman (1906-2006), die van 1934-1950 onafgebroken bij Warner Bros. werkte en er zowat alle opdrachten aannam die hem werden aangeboden. Als regisseur—vanaf 1939—stond hij bekend en werd hij geprezen omdat hij snel en efficiënt werkte, binnen zijn budget bleef en goed kon opschieten—of op z’n minst obstakels kon overwinnen—met moeilijke sterren als Joan Crawford en Bette Davis (foto bovenaan: Bette Davis en Vincent Sherman op de set van “Mr. Skeffington,” 1944).

Tijdens zijn carrière, die bijna een halve eeuw duurde, was hij bevriend met Humphrey Bogart, Rita Hayworth, Glenn Ford, Errol Flynn, Ida Lupino, Ann Sheridan, Ava Gardner en John Garfield, die hij regisseerde in “Saturday’s Children” (1940), een depressiedrama dat Garfield de kans gaf om te breken met misdaadfilms.
